In August, AI scientists around the world gathered in virtual attendance for the 2020 ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD). The conference brings together researchers and practitioners from data science, data mining, knowledge discovery, large-scale data analytics and big data.
Taha Kass-Hout, director of machine learning, AWS Health AI, delivered a talk on the role of artificial intelligence in transforming healthcare.
While AI has been applied to healthcare for years, Kass-Hout explains, the last three years have seen more than 100,000 publications surfacing opportunities for AI in healthcare, from administrative and operational challenges, to clinical applications like differential diagnoses, routine treatments and drug discovery.
The advancements in cloud computing and approaches to deep learning, which already are being deployed across industries like finance, retail, fashion and real estate, Kass-Hout noted, can help transform the healthcare industry, and improve patient care.
